HOW TO TASTE YOUR WINE
Wine tasting has never solely been about tasting at all. The term "wine tasting" is somewhat misleading. Wine tasting is a process that involves all the senses. It begins with engaging the eyes to observe a wine's characteristics in colour and viscosity, in brightness, sediment, the beading on the glass. It recruits the sense of smell to discover subtle notes, aromas of fruits, herbs, flowers and spices. It tempts the sense of touch to feel for textures that tell of its weight, engaging taste buds to tell us of its sweetness, its acidity, alcohol content and tannin level. Only lastly does it engage the sense of flavour, the aspect we associate most with wine tasting. The sense of flavour is applied to assess the balance of the wine, to savour the finish of the wine and to define the complexity of the wine.
