A friend picked this up for a dinner we were having. I admit having a fondness for the word "bodacious" and being curious to try this wine based on the name alone, so I tried a glass.
Basics:
boasting a beautiul 12% alcohol by volume, Bodacious Smooth White is bottle in BC (region not specified) by Constellation Brand Inc. Its a blend, of course, states on the back as Sauvignon Blanc and Moscato. It is a smooth wine, as its title states, but whether this is due to a MLF process or some other means is not mentioned. I can tell you that it is purchasable at the BCL for $9.99 and is marked as a medium sweetness.
The Bottle Brags:
the back says in very colourful bold typing, " Rich, Crisp, Fruit Forward, Bold." if that doesn't spell it out for you, it also says "with aromas of tropical fruit, citrus and peach."
The Reveiwer's Write:
The LCBO will describe this bottle as "Pale straw colour; aromatic floral nose; off-dry and fruity with floral and peach notes on the palate."
The Amateur's Awareness:
Appearance:
the color is actually quite clear, but with the palest of yellow. It isn't that sickly dull pale yellow either, its more of a bright pale yellow, like a new and youthful pale yellow that was purposefully done rather than a faded out and old pale yellow. The legs don't give away hints of anything full in body, medium in body at most.
Nose:
The prominent aroma is honey. This is followed up by something like a grapefruit and the classic sweet melon, like honeydew melon or something.
Palate:
First noticeably characteristic is its sweetness. Its light of body, but with its sweetness it gives a thicker illusion. Its definitely silky, which would explain its "smooth" name. It really comes across as honeyed water...with alcohol of course. It might carry the slightest peachy aftertaste that is quite quick to fade.
Wine and Food Pairing:
had this one with a chicken noodle and vegetable soupy stew dish, along with some eggplant and cheese popper things and a feta cheese and assortment salad. It went well. The sweeter honeyed aspect wasn't overpowering and yet it didn't come washed out in flavour by the dishes.
I would think this wine would serve best beside some summer fruit that go well with honey. perhaps some apple, peach, nectarine, kiwi, melon, even papaya. It would go alongside a dish that emphasizes a yogurt feature such as a yogurt dressing or dip. It might find itself good company with seafood or asian cuisine, even a simple salad, those lighter flavours that can stand up to a sweeter white wine.
Bottom of the Bottle:
Honey wine. That is what this Bodacious Smooth White reminds me of, honey-wine (which is made from fermented honey and often referred to as mead which is actually slightly different from Honey-wine.)
